World Religion Seminar Grows Through a Second Season
This year’s seven-week comparative religion series sponsored by VICA and held
on Monday evenings in January and February at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation
of Venice averaged nearly 150 participants each week. Following a keynote address
by Dr. Darrell J. Fasching, Professor of Religious Studies at the University of South Florida, successive sessions were led by notable spokespersons of five faith groups— Native American, Islam, Mormon, Hindu and Unitarian Universalism.

Based on a general agreement that “it should be the mission of faith communities
to learn from and about each others’ religion ,” VICA members as well as widely
diverse members of the Venice community rated the experience quite positively and encouraged organizers to pursue future programs of this type.

Plans are already being discussed for next year’s schedule and members’ ideas and
proposals are being solicited now. Speak up!

On Presidents, Editors and Growth
VICA President, Janet Onnie, and our new partner Sheila Hollowell of the Florida Faith In Action Network outlined plans for VICA's increasing role in community service activities.

The newsletter's founding editor, Lori Rivera, bequeathed the post to Don Hughes. The common thread of these two events is their growing need for member help.

Contact a board member to volunteer some of your time and expertise or send an
email to mchug@verizon.net.

VICA Project Director
One of VICA's community outreach projects is to partner with Florida Interfaith in installing emergency flashing lights on the existing outdoor porch light fixture of a homebound or at-risk person. The project director will work with the Sarasota County and Venice City Police, Fire Departments, and other service providers to identify people needing this safety aid, develop a criteria for eligibility, and gather volunteers to install the lights. The project will be grant-funded and will probably take about 6 hours each week.  $10/hr.  For further information please call: Sheila Hollowell at 863-686-0078 or Janet Onnie at 941-496-8263
